What is Yaeyama Kyouri Beef?
The Yaeyama Islands are a group of small islands located in the southwestern part of Okinawa, including Ishigaki Island and Yonaguni Island. Yaeyama Kyouri Beef is carefully selected from female cattle born in these islands, carrying the lineage of Tajima cattle, and raised over a long fattening period.
In the typical Japanese beef production system, there is a division between calf breeders (responsible for breeding and raising calves until birth) and fattening farmers (who purchase calves at market and raise them for beef). Traditionally, only fattening farmers across Japan have produced branded beef. However, Yaeyama Kyouri Beef is Japan's first branded beef produced by calf breeders themselves.
